What's Wrong with Them?
Text A
I'm forty
married with two children. My trouble
that
haven't got enough
do. The kids are at school all day
the house
empty. So
eat chocolates, mostly. I've put
a lot
weight , but
can't give them up.
try as hard as
can but
just can't stop eating.
Doctor Bruce writes :
think Mrs Allen would be happier if she found
job, or if she got out
the house more
made some interesting friends. If she did that,
think
weight problem would be solved.
I'm sixteen. My trouble
my spotty skin. I've used all
creams
the market, but none
them do any good. And now I've met
marvellous girl. But I'm afraid
ask her
go out with me.
Doctor Bruce writes: Most teenagers suffer from this,
course, at some time or other. And
makes them very shy
self-conscious. 'What will other people think
me, if they see me like this?' they wonder. And it's
pity, because if they didn't worry so much,
skin trouble would soon disappear. Tom should learn
relaxation technique, yoga
example. Then
think he'd solve
problem very quickly.
My problem
time.
haven't enough
it.
sleep badly, and
wake up tired.
get indigestion every day
now I'm beginning
get bad headaches
pains
my chest. And don't tell me
take
holiday, doctor.
haven't got time.
Doctor Bruce writes ; If Mr Tyler had more common sense ,he'd find
time
have
holiday, or change
job. If he thought for
minute, he'd see that he can't go
like this. He should rest more. Then he'd work better. But that's
silly thing about men like him. They only believe they're ill when they're almost dead.
Text B
Dear Doctor :
am forty-seven years old, male, and
average height
weight. My health generally seems quite good except
one problem.
wake up every morning feeling tired-so tired that
can hardly get out
bed.
All day at work
fight this tired feeling, just dragging myself around. When
get home from work around 5. 30,
have
good dinner with my family
then sit dow n
read
newspaper. But before
have finished reading
front page,
fall asleep
my chair
often sleep until 8. 30 or 9. 00 p.m.
When
wake up from this nap,
feel wonderful. I'm full
energy
ready
do
day's work. But at that hour there
nothing
do but watch television, which
do until after midnight.
Even at midnight
still do not feel sleepy, but
know
ought
get
good night's rest, so
take
sleeping pill
go
bed. It's often two o'clock
the morning before
pill puts me
sleep. Just
few hours after that
have
drag myself out
bed again
go
work. All day
feel too tired
work.
just drag myself around until it's time
go home.
Do you think there might be something wrong with my blood?
J. T. L.
When this letter appeared
the DEAR DOCTOR column
a newspaper,
doctor's reply zeras printed belozo it. Here
mhat
doctor answered :
Dear Mr L. :
don't think there
anything wrong with your blood. The key
your problem
that long nap after dinner.
If you didn't sleep
hours during
early part
the evening, you would be more ready
sleep at bedtime. If you didn't nap after dinner, you would not want
stay up so late,
you would not feel
need
take
sleeping pill. The pill
still working
your system when you get up
the morning. This helps account
the fact that you feel tired all day.
You should get out
the habit
sleeping during
evening. Right after your evening meal, engage
some sort
physical activity-a sport such as bowling, perhaps. Or get. together with friends
an evening
cards
conversation. Then go
bed at `your usual time or
little earlier,
you should be able
get
good night's rest without taking
pill.
If you can get into
habit
spending your evenings this way,
am sure you will feel less tired during
day. At first
may be hard
you
go
sleep without taking
pill. If so,get up
watch television or do some jobs around your house until you feel sleepy. If you fall asleep
then wake up
few hours later, get up but do not take
leeping pill.
Read
while or listen
the radio,
make yourself
warm drink. Eat
sandwich or
cookie. Then go back
bed. Even if you get only
few hour's sleep that night, you will feel better,
the morning than you usually feel after taking
pill. The next night you will be ready
sleep at an earlier hour.
The most important thing
to avoid taking that nap right after dinner and
avoid taking pills.
Additional Information
Yesterday's drizzle did not dampen Beijingers' enthusiasm
events marking
first national dental care day.
People
all ages crowded around medical experts who answered questions about dental care,
about toothbrushes
toothpaste.
A girl
her 20's approached
consulting desk set by
Oral Medical College
the Beijing University
Medical Sciences at
Xidan crossroad. She wanted
know if there was anything wrong with her teeth.
The girl dreamed about losing all her teeth ,
, worse yet , her teeth ached when she awoke every morning.
After examining her mouth,
consultant said her teeth looked all right. Sometimes, however, tension makes peoples' teeth ache. Relax, she was told. And if that does not help, get
thorough dental examination.
Young parents wanted
know how
keep their children's teeth healthy.
One by one ,
doctors answered their questions
outlined
best solutions
them.
More than 500 medical specialists from
8 districts
suburban counties across
municipality as well as over 200 teachers
students from
Oral Medical College
the beijing University
Medical Sciences took part
the sidewalk consultations.
And about 47 consulting stations were set up

"I never thought there would be so much scientific knowledge
tooth brushing," said
middle-aged man. "National Dental Care day has taught me how important it
to take care
my teeth
how
do it," he said. According
information from
National Dental Diseases Prevention Group , similar activities were conducted yesterday
