     Introduction
   Most Americans never have any contact withpolice excepttraffic violations.  However,when other Americans breaklaw, they are supposedbe guaranteedfair trial.   If ita serious crime,jury will concludedefendant’s guilt or innocence. 
多数美国人除违反交通规章制度外从未和警察打过交道。然而,美国人违法,他们就被保证公正审判。如果重大罪行,陪审团就会宣判被告罪,或者无罪。

Gina:  He got arrested all right.
Harold:  Ifremember, he got off withlight sentence4.  Something like three yearsa minimum-security prison.
Gina:  Yup, that's him.  He made millionsdollars selling bondspeopleended up withpilecash when they became useless.
Harold: thinkgovernment fined himsmall amount,he keptresthis foreign bank accounts.  He's stillmillionaire.
Gina:  That'skindthingAmerica that gets me mad.  Some guy pulls offstock scheme5makes millions while spendingbare minimum sentencejail.
Harold: know.  And some poor guy that robsliquor store makes $500 at mostends upjailfiveten years.
Gina:  Yup, you got it.  CriminalsAmerica dolot better if they're white-collar thieves.
Harold:  So what's Michael Milliken upthese days?
Gina:  He's giving lecturesbusiness at colleges.

2.   A pyramid scheme.
Val:  Hey, look atoffergotmy e-mail.  It says thatcan get rich quickly while working at home!
Peter:  Do you also believeSanta Clausthe Tooth Fairy?
Val:  What do you mean?
Peter: mean that you're gullible6.  You shouldn't believe everything you read, especiallythe Internet. 
Val:  Butseems likegood idea.  Allhavedofirst send some moneythe person who sent meletter.  After that he'll tell me howearn much more money. 
Peter:  Sounds likepyramid scheme.  Have you heardthose before? 
Val:  Pyramid scheme?  Whatthat?
Peter:  It'sscam7 that's baseda hierarchy8, likepyramid.  The person attop askspeople below himmoney,then tells themgoask other peoplemoney while sending someit backhim.
Val:  Sounds goodme.  The guy attop gets moneyso dopeople below him. 
Peter:  Not exactly.  The scam keepsgoing, withpeople atbottom paying moremore money until they reachvery bottom.
Val:  What happens then?
Peter:  Nothing.  The people atbottom give their moneythe people above them,they get nothing. They end up losing.  That's why it'sscam. 
Val: see. guessshould be more careful about whatread, especiallythe Internet where you have no idea who anybody is.

3.    Clever thieves.
Harry:  So Kim, have you ever had anything stolen?
Kim:  Stolen?  No, why?
Harry:  My uncle just hadmotorcycle stolenfew nights ago. was just thinking about how clever criminals9 are these days.
Kim:  Criminals are clever?  They're only successful when people are careless.
Harry: don't know.  The ones who stole my uncle's motorcycle were pretty good.
Kim:  If your uncle had an alarm system0, thenwouldn't have happened.
Harry:  He did.  It was onethe best ones available.  But that didn't stop them from disabling it.  Anda crowded street too.
Kim:  Didn't anyone stop them? 
Harry:  You would think that people would be smart enoughstop something like that.  No one knewmotorcycle was being stolen.  The thieves camea truckconvinced everybody that my uncle was parked illegallythey were theretow2away.
Kim:  Wow, they were good. guess criminals aren't that dumb3 after all.
Harry:  That's notend.  They were so good that they convincedbystander4help them liftmotorcycleput itthe truck.

Policeman:  You're not sure?  You were going at 90 miles per hour!  That's 25 mph overlegal speed limit6!  Have you been drinking?
Bob:  No, Officer, not at all.
Policeman:  Then how can you explain your behavior?
Bob:  Well,guessjust wasn't paying attentionthe speedometer7.
Policeman:  Not paying attentionthe speedometer?  Why not?
Bob:  Um, becausewas busy talkingmy friend.
Policeman:  Oncell phone?
Bob:  Yes,was usingcell phone. just bought it, sodecidedgive my friendphone calltell him about it.  Whiledid thatalso turnedthe radiowas listeningonemy favorite songs,eating some foodhad bought atfast food restaurant, and, um…… guesshad too many distractions8.
Policeman:  That's definitely true.  I'm goinghavegive youticket.  Please rememberdrive more carefully next time.
