For several reasons, many retired Americans choose notlive with their grown children. Even elderly widowswidowers chooselivetheir own. This might seem strangeelderly Chinese, but older Americans have become accustomedhaving their own cars, homes,activities.

Fred:  Well, it's not like my parents want melive at homerestmy life.  They said that it's ok ifmove back homebegin with, but they want mefindplacemy own afteryear or so.
Valerie:  My parents just didn't handle my older sister very well,becausethat, they want mebe more independent.  They think that it's important thatshould learn howlivemy own.
Fred: knowneedlearn that myself, butjust don't havemoney foratmoment.  Living at home allows mesave up some money beforestarted findingplace.
Helpful Information:
Americans value independence, even when they’re getting older.  They learn that from an early age.  Afterageeighteen, most wanthave their own homes, demonstrating their independence.  And one wayshowing thatliving separately from their parents or their adult children.
